The Governmental Affairs office is responsible for representing Emory University and the Emory Health Care System in many areas of state government. The office serves as the official liaison with the Georgia General Assembly, the Governor's Office and Lt. Governor's Office, state agencies that include the Department of Community Health, Department of Human Resources, and Georgia Student Finance Commission.
State budget priorities include: funding for the HOPE Scholarship and Tuition Equalization Grants; the Georgia Cancer Coalition and Georgia Research Alliance; Medicaid provider reimbursement and Medical School funding.
Maintaining provisions of comprehensive tort reform included in SB 3, enacted in 2005, will always be a number one priority on Emory University's state agenda. Other issues on the state agenda that improve access to health care for all Georgians include legislation allowing Advanced Practice Nurses the ability to write prescriptions through a nurse protocol, collaborative practice agreement with a physician.
Governmental Affairs continually strives to create new, and build upon existing, relationships with all State officials, responding quickly to their requests, and informing them about programs at Emory that many have attended. Additionally, a proactive effort is made to influence passage of legislation that favorably benefits Emory University, as well as mitigate the impact of legislation that has a negative impact. Many legislative and regulatory successes have been achieved by this office that have resulted in benefits to the University. Additional Links
